Momma Teresa & NBA predictions

My brain is fried today, so how about a quote from Mother Teresa:
"It is more difficult to fight poverty in a rich country than in a poor one."

----------------------

1st Round Predictions
WESTERN CONFERENCE
Lakers over Nuggets in 6 games
Mavs over Hornets in 6 games
Spurs over Suns in 7 games
Jazz over Rockets in 5 games

MINOR LEAGUES (a few warm up games until the Celtics and Pistons battle it out)
Celtics over Hawks in 4
Pistons over 76ers in 5
Magic over Raptors in 6
Cavs over Wizards in 7

That makes you sit back in the chair and think.

I have had to privilege to travel to several countries that fall into the category of "poor". They were some of the richest people I've ever met. I can't help it if that sounds cliché, it's the truth.

I can't get the quote out of my mind. I don't want to be argumentative, but I must be missing something -- and I think highly of Mother Teresa's observations. But is she saying that India and poor 3rd-world countries fight poverty better than the US and western Europe?

While I agree that we who live in richer nations tend to expect the poor to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps, it seems that many other nations simply accept it. Many nations, due to the politics within them, perpetuate poverty. In fact, some even refuse outside assistance.

I think I am missing something. I want to get it.

Rick,
Call me a postmodern, but your comments are not argumentative, but conversational.
In response to your question, Mother Teresa is not laying forth a doctrine, but instead she is speaking contextually. This statement wasn't made for the dying people she was serving in India, but rather for the greedy people in the West.
You are right with your statement "I think I am missing something." I think all of us are. We weren't born into extreme poverty like many people in the world. We have been born in a country where the poor can still receive a free breakfast and lunch from the age of 5-18. In America, we oppress the poor...we make people poor...we exploit the poor...

Josh
We also treat the poor sometimes as if they are the devil incarnate.
They are to be avoided instead of helped.

Josh- Momma T is on to something.

NBA- do they still play that these days?

Only a loyal Mavs fan could take the Mavs over the Hornets in 6.

Dream on, bro.

They are exiting in the first round.

Nice.

Avery gets fired.

Dirk demands a trade.

You are back to the Mavs the NBA has known and loved for three decades.

After watching game 1, I going to have to say that I think the Hornets will win the series in 6.
